MATTY'S MAILBAG
I get some pretty weird stuff in my inbox on a regular basis. Complaints from delusional, overbearing parents about little Johnny's "crucial" catch being left out of an article are pretty routine, and column submissions about deep, witty thoughts that swim around in a guy's head while fishing on Lake Okeechobee are fairly common too. But the email I got yesterday might take the cake.
This guy wants me to run an article he recently wrote that deals with "accomplishing one's goals." Titled "KIDS PRO WRESTLING WAS A DREAM THAT CAME TRUE," I'm sure you can imagine the look on my face. I can't bare to post the entire article here, but you can go to this link if you must know the complete, inspirational true story. Here's a few exerts I thought were especially funny, along with my own comments.
"In 1984, when I was 14 years old, I had a dream to run my very own professional wrestling league. Starting out with nothing but four mattresses, by 1986 we were promoting live venues all across the Twin Cities metro area and also were producing a weekly cable wrestling show all across the nation. I was 16 years old."
Matty's thoughts: So many children start out the same way, with bed mattresses, sofa cushions and face paint. Then someone gets hurt, Mom comes in and tells everyone to stop it or she'll give them something to cry about and our dreams of starting our own kids pro wrestling federation are dealt a fatal blow! Ah, humanity! I've been scarred!
"But over time, I would think back to the days of the league that I used to run as a kid and watch some of the shows we produced back in the 1980s, and the memories of what I did as a kid started to come back to me. Looking back, I realized that we had something special in those days that never has been duplicated since, and perhaps never will be. "
Matty's thought: Yeah, it's hard to go wrong with things back in 1982. Camaros, blue jean jackets, mullets, disco's last days, bad tv shows, even worse music, hedonism at its finest/worse.. The word "special" might be a stretch. Let's hope those days are never duplicated.
"Watching that stuff made me think back to what we did in the 1980s, and made me once again realize that we did something that was very unique at the time. And so the idea of writing a book about our story soon hit me. But where do I begin? I had no clue as to how to do this. So several years went by with me just me having this story in my head."
Matty's thought: I once thought about telling someone the time I thought that Care Bears were way cooler than G.I. Joe's, but then I realized that such an admission might make me look like a total loser. Boy, I'm sure glad I never let that secret slip out, especially to such a large public audience..........................uh.....
"Then in recent years, self-publishing had become very popular and reasonable to do. And last year I did some Internet searching and found that writing a book and publishing it is something that can be done quite easily...My main objective with the story was that I wanted kids to learn that they really can accomplish anything if they want it bad enough."
Matty's thought: Yes kids, you too can start your own fake wrestling league or Dungeons and Dragons tour or even an ant farm federation and then be able to write a book about it 20 years from now because it's so easy. Anyone can be a published writer. By the time your my age, you'll be able to get our own doctorate from sending in Frosted Flakes box tops to Kellogg's. Aim for the stars, kids!
"And finally in October 2005, "Pro Wrestling Kids' Style - The Most Amazing Untold Story In Professional Wrestling History" was a published book. It was a lifelong accomplishment that took me years to get to, but it finally was a finished product."
Matty's thought: I could be behind in the times, but isn't October 2005 still on our agenda for the year?
