  • I've decided carnivals are not my bag. And carnival people are far scarier.

The carnival closed up today, and I can't say that I'm sad to see it go. There's something very compelling and aesthically pleasing about viewing the colorful lights from afar...but something altogether unnerving about the true picture up close. Maybe this is just my "inner clown fear" coming out.

Probably what was most unnerving were the people working the booths...sullen, hollow-eyed persons that looked on the edge of doing something desperate. Some of the persons manning the booths were devout workers, jumping on every possible walkerby who might try their hand on the game. Others seemed to hide in the shadows until an unsuspecting carnival-goer (interesting... "carnal" = pertaining to the flesh) lingered too long around a booth.

And then there was a final character that honestly spooked me. I could tell that he really didn't care if anyone came to the ringtoss or whatever he was doing. A disgruntled, glossed-over type look just sat on his face. It made me wonder what it was like to be him and what had led him to this place.

Funny how happy places are often filled with desperate souls. Funny how some of the things that we think will give us maximun pleasure only reveal our lack of true passion.

Anyway, I began to feel convicted about how I viewed the carnival workers and started wondering how Christ views them. Then I realized that perhaps He sees me and the carnival worker as the same.

Jason and Amanda went with me to the spectacle but left this morning for Washington with Mom Immel. Jason took most of his stuff from the house, so for the first time in three years I can pretty much say Jason and I don't live together anymore. A sad landmark, but an anticipated future of better things.

Along those same lines, the good Doc Masoner came to Sunday School for the first time in weeks today, but he and the missus will be taking off for good in the coming weeks. A gaping hole left to fill? Certainly. An grand opportunity for growth? Most definitely.

And to close the evening, we have today's sign of the Apocalypse: Ashton Kutcher + trucker hats = sexiness
