Groove comes to Dayton

I still remember the very first time I met Ben Norquist. He, a fledgling 18-year-old fresh with energy and optimism. Me, a 22-year-old entering my final year of college with just a bit of cynicism. As the resident assistant of Woodlee-Ewing Second long hall, I was helping freshmen move into their new dorm rooms when I ran into the future Groove Center member.

"I'm really looking forward to getting to know you better in the coming year," said the young Bennie U. with a long, intent stare that breathed an odd sincerity and challenged my own cynicism.

I remember thinking, "That's a different guy." Little did I know.

Ben came to town last weekend to work on the 1982 Volvo that was formerly the chariot of Mr. Ben Williams. The car sat idle for nearly a year outside the Rhea House after Ben Williams found another automotive love and gave the car to Bennie. After several hours of work and several trips to Advanced Auto Parts, the old gal resurrected...uh turned over... and began to purr like an old lapcat on a cold winter's night. Actually, she still needs some work, but Ben and I took part in a hearty handshake, like fathers after childbirth, when she started shaking off the cobwebs.

Add some Macgyver-viewing, running into Dave Schiffrin (what the heck?) and Batman Begins and late-night Steak-N-Shake with Ritterbush, and it made for a busy but enjoyable Saturday.

The stuff in the right hand came out of the air filter in the left hand...really.

Thought you knew everything that Ben Norquist was good at, didn't you?
